VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) — The Valdosta Police Department says a man and a woman have been charged with aggravated assault after a man was shot through an apartment window.
Police say the shooting happened Thursday around 4:35 a.m. in the 1100 block of Old Statenville Road. When officers responded, they were given a description of the car that was involved in the gunshots.
While searching for the suspect vehicle, officers found a car matching the suspect vehicle's description parked in the driveway of a residence in the 800 block of Bethune Street. That's where officers found Demetrick Ponder and Alyssa Vasvary lying down in the front seat of the vehicle.
Once officers made contact, they say Ponder, who was driving, sped off in the car, driving through yards to run away from pursing officers. Eventually, officers caught up with the pair who were quickly apprehended after trying to run away from the car.
VPD says they then received a call that a victim had arrived at South Georgia Medical Center, after being shot while he was in his apartment in the 1100 block of Old Statenville Road.
The victim reported that a bullet had come through his apartment window, hitting him and leaving him with a non-life threatening injury. Due to the on-going investigation on this case, the victim’s name and information is being withheld at this time.
Through an investigation, the car Ponder and Vasvary were in was connected to the shooting. The two were taken to Lowndes County Jail, where they are currently being detained on the following charges:
· Ponder - aggravated assault (party to the crime), obstruction of an officer, fleeing and attempting to elude, hit and run, and driver’s license violation
· Vasvary- aggravated assault (party to the crime) and obstruction of an officerr.
Police say detectives have determined that the pair may be connected to another incident that occurred right before the shooting, along with additional offenders. Both investigations are active and further charges are pending.
The perseverance of our officers and subsequent thorough investigation by our detectives and crime scene personnel, resulted in the quick and efficient apprehension of these offenders. The detectives are continuing to investigate leads possibly connecting this incident to other incidents in the city.” Chief Leslie Manahan.
