TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — From serving our country, to shaping our future.
That's the goal of the Troops to Teachers program, and its happening right here in the Capital City.
Troops to Teachers is a military career transition program that helps eligible veterans begin new careers as K-12 public school teachers.
It's main goal is to hire more teachers to address critical teacher shortages, while giving veterans jobs.
"When new recruits come in the military, they work with them they're training with them and they get a lot of job satisfaction seeing them succeed," said Ron Burton, Director of Troops to Teachers program at Tallahassee Community College. "So they carry that into the classroom and when they step into the class room they've got a new set of troops, so their new mission is to train and teach."
The program has existed since 1994, and thanks to a partnership between Tallahassee Community College and the Florida Department of Education, it is now in Tallahassee.
