TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Next week is Transgender Awareness Week and Tallahassee is celebrating with events all week to highlight the transgender community.

There will be a memorial at the Railroad Square Drum Circle to honor the many transgender lives lost due to violence.

Capital Tea, an organization that brings together and highlights the local transgender community is also hosting virtual yoga, virtual trans trivia, and a virtual drag show.

Events end Friday on Trans Day of Remembrance with a vigil for those who have died.

"This memorial is very important to our community," said Janel Diaz, the CEO of Capital Tea Inc. "As a black trans woman, it is very important that we show people that we are just that - we are people too. You don't have to be afraid of me. You don't have to be afraid of what you don't understand. Just respect me as a person."
