PERRY, Fla. (WTXL) — Help is now available for people furloughed at Georgia-Pacific in Perry.

Big Bend Technical College announced it's offering $500 scholarships for anyone who's been laid off.

The scholarship would go towards one of its 13 "career-in-a-year" trade courses. BBTC has already seen interest from displaced employees.

School officials say helping those employees bounce back is crucial to keeping their small community afloat.

"At 150 workers, that's a lot of money in our economy here in Taylor County that trickles down," said Dr. Danny Glover, the superintendent of Taylor County. "Obviously that's going to have a lot of impact on our economy. Obviously it's going to have an effect on our students when they come back. They're going through the pandemic and now they have to deal with a family member being laid off from work."

Anyone interested in taking advantage of the scholarship is asked to reach out to Big Bend Technical College..

The Director says, if the demand is big enough, the scholarship amount could increase.
