TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The Tallahassee Police Department’s Burglary Crimes Unit is investigating multiple incidents involving the theft of rent checks and money orders from after hours drop-boxes.

According to police, there have been multiple incidents where rent checks and money orders have been stolen from after hours drop-boxes and mail slots, of property management companies or apartment complexes.

TPD says thieves have been able to steal the cash, checks or money orders and use the money for their own purposes. As a result, owners are not getting rent payments, and residents who paid their rent with a money order are not getting credited for the payment.

Authorities suggest that residents hand deliver their payment directly to the office during business hours or take advantage of electronic payment solutions if offered.

TPD says if you see something suspicious at the payment boxes please give police a call at 850-606-5800 or 850-891-4200.

If you have any information regarding these thefts, please contact TPD’s Burglary Crimes Unit 850-891-4200 or Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS.
