Pedestrian safety in spotlight once again

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A pedestrian was hit and killed on North Monroe Street this week bringing pedestrian safety in Tallahassee into the spotlight once again.

With the warmer spring weather and events like Springtime-Tallahassee this weekend, there will be a lot more people walking and a greater need for caution by both pedestrians and drivers.

Tallahassee Police Department officials say the first line of defense is to be aware of your surroundings.

The crosswalks are out there. We encourage everyone to use the crosswalks. A lot of times drivers are not looking for pedestrians to cross the road in any other place except those intersections," said TPD Officer Damon Miller. "Sometimes even when pedestrians do use those intersections they still get hit."

And you've heard about distracted driving, but there's such a thing as distracted walking.

Officer Miller says a lot of people have been injured by texting or looking at their cell phone while walking. They crash into poles, trip over cracks in the pavement, and run into other people.
