TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As you're getting ready for Thanksgiving this year, you might be thinking about frying a turkey.

State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis says Thanksgiving is the number one day for home cooking fires.

On Wednesday, Patronis teamed up with the Tallahassee Fire Department for a turkey fryer demonstration.

Make sure you keep the fryer as far away from your home as you can, while still keeping it level. Thaw the bird completely, ice or water mixed with hot oil can start a fire. And never walk away from the turkey while it's frying.

"Unattended cooking by far the leading factor of cooking fire related death, so following a few thanksgiving safety tips we can ensure your holidays don't turn into a disaster," said Patronis.

Some other tips: don't overfill the fryer and keep an eye on the oil temperature and always have a fire extinguisher ready.
