THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Thomasville Police are buying back guns in hopes of keeping them off the streets. It's an effort to prevent more shootings.

At least one gun has been turned in following the buyback announcement on Facebook.

Those who turn in a firearm will receive a gift card of $50 or more, depending on the type of gun.

Thomasville Police want to emphasize that this program is not intended to convince law-abiding citizens to turn in their guns.

Visa gift cards will be given to those who turn in guns:

  • $50 for handguns
  • $100 for rifles or shotguns
  • $150 for assault rifles.

The money funding these gift cards comes from a budget that TPD has for paying confidential informants.
