THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Local democratic party members in Thomasville are trying to get guns off of the streets and help decrease the amount of gun violence in the area.

To help crime prevention efforts, members came together and collected $900 to go towards Thomasville Police Department's gun buy back operation.

The operation gives people visa gift card for turning in firearms. Anyone who turns in an assault rifle could be given a gift card for $150.

In the wake of recent national shootings and local shootings, the chairman of the party knew that now is the time to help.

"It's our people that are getting shot. We don't want to feel that there's this kind of danger and fear here," said Mark Anderson, Democratic Party Chairman. "We usually feel very safe here we don't worry about locking our doors. It's a great community to live in and we want to keep it that way."

We reached out to the Republican Party in Thomasville to find out if they are efforting to stop gun violence in the community. We are still waiting to hear back.
