TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Seniors from across the Big Bend area are participating in the Torch Run at Cascade Park to kick off the 2020 Capital City Senior Games.

The City of Tallahassee says it’s all about fostering community within the senior community and having a little fun at the same time.

The opening ceremony for the games is Thursday evening.

For the next 11 days, seniors in the area will be competing in games ranging from basketball to track and field.

Many of the participating seniors say it’s something they look forward to every year, like their own Olympic Games, and it makes them feel great.

Commissioner Elaine Bryant says this is all about supporting Tallahassee’s growing senior population.

"It gives seniors the opportunity to come together first of all and have that friendly, friendly, friendly competition but also a feeling of community," Bryant said. "Where neighborhoods even can actually come together and share in a fun activity in Tallahassee."

The games allow local athletes to compete to qualify for the Florida Senior Games State Championships and the National Senior Games.

There are many events coming up in the next two weeks before the games end with a Senior Celebration of Athletes on March 17.
