TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Age knows no limits when it comes to matters of the heart and some seniors in Tallahassee are proving just that by shining a light on people in their community.

The Tallahassee Senior Center will honor eight seniors setting a shining example in our community in their Silver Star Gala Thursday. The event honors those who are not letting their age keep them from doing what they can to help others.

One of those seniors is 81-year-old Robert Smith. Smith is an established artist who's taught painting classes at the Tallahassee Senior Center for 11 years.

He's says there's an intrinsic reward to finding a passion that keeps you active in the community.

"I think remaining active in the community keeps you moving and going and and being a better person, but I think it makes you live longer," said Robert Smith, one of Tallahassee's Silver Stars.

While he's been recognized on several occasions for his work, Smith says he's still surprised by this year's honor.

"I was just a little bit taken aback by the fact that somebody nominated me for this and that I'm receiving it this year and I hope that the continue doing this because there are a lot of deserving people for a Silver Star award," said Smith.

The Gala starts at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at the FSU University Center.
