TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Thursday night the Tallahassee School of Math and Science hosted their 'Freedom Fest' in celebration of key moments in African-American history and the 65th anniversary of Brown VS. The Board of Education.
Guest speakers included Mary Call Proctor, daughter of former Florida Governor and civil rights advocate LeRoy Collins.
The event also included performances by TSMS students, and an open discussion on the some of the historical events in freedom leading up to present day.
"Its important for the community to have a appreciation and understanding of history in general if we have a a deeper appreciation and understanding of everyone's history we can better understand each other and where we are now," said Andrea Oliver, Event Coordinator.
U.S. Army retiree, Sergeant Major Jarvis Rosier also provided a presentation on African Americans in the Civil War.
