Tallahassee residents searching for answers after stimulus checks get deposited into wrong accounts

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — People across the country, including right here in the Big Bend, want to know where their money is after many found out their stimulus money was deposited into someone else's account.

On Wednesday, Galaxy Tax Services, a tax preparer's office was bombarded with people who were looking for their $1,200 stimulus checks. Some people had received theirs while others had not.

People came looking for answers after some, waiting desperately for those stimulus checks, didn't get them.

Employees with Galaxy Tax Service in Tallahassee say the IRS is not sending stimulus checks to tax preparer offices.

They added that tax companies do not process stimulus checks either only tax refunds.

The problem is, some people saw their stimulus checks had been deposited into accounts and claim they never got the funds.

"Unfortunately, the account our customers are seeing on the website, it's not a bank where you can go to withdraw money or something like that. It's a bank the IRS uses to receive refund after you file your taxes," said Frenel Cariani, a tax preparer. "For some reason, it looks like the IRS sent that money to those banks, and then those banks sent the money back to the IRS because they won't process the money for free. From what I think."

As the payments rolled out Wednesday, many people across the country were encountering problems, ranging from error messages to money being deposited into the wrong account.

So what can you do? We turned to Nathan Wadlinger at FSU's College of Business for some answers.

"Call your preparer or go to IRS.gov." said Wadlinger.

And like so many businesses right now, the IRS is short staffed. Their website clearly states "do not call" about issues with the stimulus check. Those without direct deposit will receive a paper check but it's unclear when that will be.
