TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate after a man accused of setting a woman's body on fire after attempting to behead her has died while in custody at the Leon County Detention Facility.

On Sunday, the Leon County Sheriff's office said 43-year-old Little Daniel Owens was found unresponsive inside his cell.

Deputies tried to use life-saving measures to revive him, but he was pronounced deceased shortly after.

LCSO said that Owens was in his cell alone at the time and don't believe foul play is involved.

Per protocol, FDLE has been called in to assist with the investigation.

Owens had been incarcerated at the facility since November 2019 on homicide charges. According to probable cause documents, Owens is accused of killing a woman and attempting to behead her before setting her body on fire behind an apartment complex in the 2600 block of West Pensacola Street.

When interviewed by investigators, Owens told police that he believed the victim was a "witch" that needed to be burned.
