TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The sixth annual Summer Fill-a-Truck Food Drive brought dozens of residents and businesses together to fight hunger.
$5,342 was donated, and 5,702 pounds of food was dropped off.
The donated food and money goes to Second Harvest of the Big Bend, which will help them provide meals for food insecure children during the summer, when more kids need food.
"It's so important for us this time of year. During the summer, we see a surge in hunger because kids are out of school. We also see a decline in the amount of food and monetary donations," said Rick Minor, CEO of Second Harvest of the Big Bend. "That's why today's event is so important."
Second Harvest of the Big Bend hopes to raise more than $10,000 and collect more than 8,000 pounds of food. The food drive continued until 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
There are several companies and businesses that still need to either drop off their contributions, or have them be picked up. A final total of funds and foods will not be available until next week sometime.
