DECATUR, Ga. (WTXL) — A Mother of three and grandmother Christina Nix Mcmillan, died last Tuesday, trying to cross Highway 310 and US Highway 84.

Her family is distraught, saying she was just trying to walk across a busy South Georgia highway.

And she's not the first person to die at that intersection.

Her niece is now leading the charge to put up a stoplight in her honor.

"It was Monday after school I came by and I had seen a wreck here. So I went home and told my grandmother that someone was in a wreck," said Cassie Roland.

Little did Cassie Roland know that one of the people involved in the wreck was her Aunt Christina on the intersection of Highway 310 and U-S Highway 84.

Her aunt died the next day at the hospital. Roland says wrecks on this road are all too familiar.

"Each of the families in Brinson has somebody that's been killed or injured up here and I've almost been in a wreck up here once because the traffic just isn't slowing down and you just have to go," said Roland.

Roland has a solution to the problem. She wants the state to put up a stop light at that intersection.

She started a petition to make sure what happened to her aunt never happens again.

"I started the petition Monday night when she first got into the hospital because there have been so many people hurt here and killed here," said Roland.

She needs to get 750 signatures to bring it to the Mayor of Brinson.

Then after that to Georgia Senator Burke to have the Department of Transportation evaluate the intersection.

The high school senior doesn't have far to go.

"Last time I checked I have 741 signatures."

Roland says the last words she spoke to her Aunt included a promise.

"The last thing I said to her was I'm going to try my hardest to make sure they get a red light put up for you," said Roland.

A promise Roland hopes to keep.

Many people left comments of loved ones killed or injured at the intersection.

At this time, we do not know the official number of wrecks or deaths.
