TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Second Harvest of the Big Bend is on a mission to end summer hunger.
More than 20,000 children in the Big Bend area struggle with hunger every summer.
Volunteers at the 6th Annual Summer Fill-A-Truck are trying to make sure that number decreases. The food and fund drive will kick off Thursday at the Tallahassee Democrat from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
One organizer of the event is hoping that the contributions this year will surpass the following years.
"This is a very impactful event and is continuing to grow. Last year, we raised $10,000 and the event raised 8,000 pounds of food, so we're hoping to top that in contributions," said Shari Hubbard, Director of Community Relations.
Hubbard wants to encourage the community to drop off non-perishable food items such as soups, rice, pasta, and canned meat.
