LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — There's a new effort in Leon County to crack down on gun violence.
Sheriff Walt McNeil says it's a coordinated effort by law enforcement all focusing in the same direction. He says he wants to get to the root of the problem and address it.
Although crime in Tallahassee has been going down, Sheriff McNeil says one issue in the area is gun violence. So they put a task force together to go after people involved in illegal activity.
"We knew we were starting with a number of warrants and we were looking at those and we were looking at those warrants and making sure that we were getting and going after those folks who had the greatest potential for violence in our community, so we were not surprised by those numbers at all," said Sheriff McNeil.
The sheriff says they have over 300 warrants out and so far they have made about 40 arrests since Monday.
He wants to send a message to the community that law enforcement are doing everything they can to make Leon County safe and decrease crime.
