TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A new report shows students in Florida's charter schools are generally outperforming students in traditional public schools.

The report indicates higher rates of grade level performance and a lower achievement gap.

Minority students performed around 90 percent higher in charter schools than their peers in traditional public schools.

"Charter schools are really benefiting from the ability that they have to be flexible in their spending and really meet the needs of students individually," said Education Advocate Jennings DePriest. "That is creating the environment where they really can succeed and outperform other educational options, but 'options' is the key word there."

The report says 47 percent of graded charter schools earned an "A" in the 2017-18 academic year.

That compares to just 28 percent of graded traditional public schools.
