TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A case that rocked the Tallahassee community. The shooting death of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. It happened five years ago today.

It was July 18, 2014 that Markel was found shot in his car outside his Betton Hills home.

The 41-year-old was the father of two boys. Markel was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead the following morning.

It wasn't until a year ago this month that the autopsy was finally released, confirming Markel's cause of death was gunshot wounds to the face and head.

It all started with a 911 call from a neighbor.

Suspect Sigfredo Garcia was arrested in May of 2016. The mother of his children, Katherine Magbanua, is also a suspect.

The trial in this case has been delayed time and time again. Last month, a judge set a September 23 trial date for both Garcia and Magbanua.

Both are charged with first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder.

Another man, Luis Rivera, pled guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
