TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Trump administration is proposing major cuts in the federal budget and it could seriously impact services here in Florida's Big Bend.

Elder Care Services says Senior Corps programs are in danger of losing funding. Last year, local seniors volunteered more than 200,000 hours, including helping with Meals on Wheels.

Jocelyne Fliger, Director of Volunteers and Engagement, said this would affect 550 seniors in the Big Bend.

"Our seniors address critical community needs. So, we have mentors in school systems. We have seniors sitting with homebound seniors," said Fliger. "We have a huge group of seniors that volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels every single day. So, without the power of volunteers, a lot of critical community needs would not be addressed."

The budget request still has to go through Congress. In the past, lawmakers have rejected cutting the agency that funds those services.
