MARIANNA, Fla. (WTXL) — The superintendent of Jackson County Schools is requesting that criminal charges be filed against the person responsible for sending threatening emails to a Marianna Middle parent last month.

H. Larry Moore, the superintendent of Jackson County Schools, sent out a press release Tuesday afternoon regarding the investigation into a threat that was sent to a Marianna Middle parent on March 20.

The Jackson County School District says that several anonymous emails were received by a parent of a Marianna Middle student on her home computer that included threats against her children. Moore says the parent received multiple threatening emails between March 18 and March 20.

When the district was out on Spring Break, Moore notes that the parent didn't receive any emails. However, when school was back in session the week after, the parent again received threatening emails on Monday and Tuesday.

Through an investigation, Moore says authorities were able to trace the threats back to a computer inside Marianna Middle School and quickly identified the person responsible. They say the person, who was not identified in the press release, confessed after being questioned about the evidence gathered during the investigation.

"Disciplinary action will be commenced and I am requesting that criminal charges be filed in this situation," Superintendent Moore wrote in the press release.

Moore says he cannot comment on whether the person invovled is a student at Marianna Middle as the investigation is ongoing.

Officials: No active shooter at Marianna Middle, anonymous threat under investigation

Law enforcement presence was heavy on the campus of Marianna Middle School Wednesday after a parent received an anonymous email threatening her children.

The Jackson County School District says that several anonymous emails were received by a parent of a Marianna Middle student on her home computer that included threats against her children.

As a precaution, school officials say the Jackson County School Board Chief of Police asked the Marianna Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s office for extra law enforcement presence on Wednesday.

The initial announcement of the law enforcement presence seemed to cause a stir, as the Jackson County School District later dispelled rumors that an active shooter situation was taking place at the school.

As of now, they say the school is secure and that extra law enforcement was placed at the school for precaution. Officials say the emails have been forwarded to law enforcement and an investigation is ongoing.
