TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Tallahassee firefighters are investigating a fire that took one life and left another in critical condition Wednesday morning in the Tower Oaks neighborhood.

Leon County Sheriff's Office says that at about 1 a.m., first responders received a call about a fire on Tower Woods Trail.

Deputies pulled a man and a woman from the burning house and transported both to a local hospital.

According to deputies, 45-year-old Marcus Jackson's injuries proved fatal, and he died at the hospital.

The fire destroyed most of the house, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Jackson's neighbors are in shock.

"I was shocked when we saw it had happened," said Jed Padilla, Tower Oaks Board President. "I was really just shocked. There's no other way of putting it."

Padilla has lived in the Tower Oaks neighborhood for a few years. He still can't believe that he won't be able to see his neighbor, Marcus Jackson, anymore.

"Marcus was a very nice individual," Padilla said. "Whenever he was out and about we would stop and chat for a while. He would ask me about my family and kids. He was a very friendly person. He was a great neighbor to have."

Padilla said that the neighborhood is going to have a meeting on Monday to discuss how they can come together to help Jackson's wife.

The woman pulled from the fire is still in critical condition. Her name has not yet been released.
