Man arrested in series of Leon County 'smash and grab' vehicle burglaries

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Tallahassee man has been arrested in connection to a series of car burglaries at medical facilities around Leon County.

Derrick Fields, 45, was taken into custody on Friday.

The Tallahassee Police Department and Leon County Sheriff’s Office’s Joint Property Crimes Task Force has been investigating a series of vehicle burglaries involving smashed windows and stolen property occurring at medical facilities in Northeast Leon County.

Since March, investigators have been examining evidence and reviewing cases with the assistance of TPD’s Crime Analysis Unit. Fields had been seen driving a white SUV and captured on surveillance video using the victims' credit cards to make fraudulent transactions.

Fields was named a suspect in the numerous vehicle burglaries and 14 warrants for his arrest were made for auto burglary and fraud related charges.

Field is facing charges of:

  • Seven counts of Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance
  • Five counts of Fraudulent Use of Another Person’s Identification
  • Two counts of Fraudulent Use of Another Person’s Identification under 18 or older than 60 years of age

He was taken to the Leon County Detention Facility. Investigators with the Joint Property Crimes Task Force continue to investigate related cases.
