LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) — Lowndes County Schools announced they are delaying the beginning of the 2020 school year to Friday, August 14.

The school year was originally scheduled to begin on August 7.

The director of public relations for the district, LaVerne Rome, said the decision for the delay is based on many factors, including feedback from teachers and staff members and the additional time will be used for professional learning.

Rome said all employees will receive required training on COVID-19 safety protocols and strategies to support students as they transition back to school.

Currently, all scheduled breaks (Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring) remain as listed in the 2020-2021 school calendar, pending necessary modifications during the year to accommodate circumstances or spread of COVID-19.
