TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Top equestrians from around the world are in Tallahassee to compete and Thursday, local school kids got to take part in an exciting community day to learn about the event.

Dressage, cross-country and show-jumping are all part of event. The Red Hills International Horse Trials runs for four days and features the creme de la creme of riders from 10 countries.

Thursday was day one.

The riders and horses arrived, got warmed up and had a vet check, something fifth graders at the Maclay Prepatory School got a front row seat for. They learned about horses, the flora and fauna in the park and what goes into competition.

"I think to see people riding on the horse was the most fun," said Mariah Drake, a Maclay Prep student.

"For the entire community to come out and to share in this fantastic park. to see what the city of Tallahassee has going on here," said Ann Haller, the Cross Country controller. "And to see the Olympic athletes and the athletes that are one day hoping to compete in this sport. It's pretty exciting."

Haller says inviting the students and anyone else who would like to attend is their way of giving back to the community.
