(WTXL) — Eighteen years ago, on September 11, 2001, the nation was shaken to its core as terrorists seized control of four airliners and killed nearly 3,000 people in the process.

Several events are being held around Big Bend and South Georgia to honor the fallen and support survivors:

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

The community is invited to come together for a 9/11 memorial ceremony at Tallahassee Fire Station 16, located at 913 Easterwood Drive, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m.

The service will center around a recounting of the day’s events with remarks from City of Tallahassee leaders and first responders. A moment of silence will be observed to mark the time the first hijacked airliner crashed into floors 93 to 99 of the North Tower (1 World Trade Center). The service will also include the presentation of the United States flag by a combined first responder Honor Guard team.

Event parking will be available at the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, 1115 Easterwood Drive.

THOMASVILLE, Ga.

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at the Thomas County Jackets Nest Football Stadium. There will be two sessions, a morning session beginning at 5:30 am and an afternoon session beginning at 4:00 pm.

There will also be a run, beginning at 7:00 am, from Station 1 on Crawford Street to the Jackets Next Stadium. The flag will be transported from the station to the stadium, and community members are encouraged to join in. All events are open to first responders throughout the local area and region, as well as citizens wishing to participate.

Pre-registration is available now at the Everett-Milton YMCA or online at ymca-thomasville.org.

The cost is $20 and children 10 and under are free. All proceeds from the event will go towards funding the completion of the 9/11 Memorial located in front of Thomasville Fire Rescue Station 1.
