LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — The Leon County Sheriff's office is investigating the death of a 66-year-old man who was found unresponsive inside the Leon County Detention Facility.

On Monday around 3:30 a.m., deputies working in the Leon County Detention Facility located an inmate, 66-year-old Melvin Richardson, unresponsive inside his cell.

LCSO said that life saving measures were attempted, but Richardson was pronounced deceased shortly after.

They said Richardson was in his cell alone at the time of his death. There is no foul play suspected in his death at this time.

"Preliminary details suggest Richardson’s death was of natural causes due to past medical history," LCSO wrote in a release sent Monday. "This remains an active investigation pending a final autopsy report. "

Richardson had been incarcerated in the LCDF since July 23 on a felony battery charge.
