LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — As students in Leon County head back to school Tuesday from Winter Break, some parents are already looking forward to next school year.

Registration for 'school choice' kicks off Tuesday. Simply put, this is a parent's best chance to lock in their student's top school for the upcoming year.

"There's a level playing field for all families so you don't need to feel the pressure about special treatment or anything, but we're excited," said Rocky Hanna, the superintendent of Leon County Schools.

The school choice window for Leon County Schools opens on Tuesday. Parents will have almost two months to enter a lottery to choose where their student attends school for the 2020-2021 school year.

Anicia Robinson is the principal for Sabal Palm Elementary. She says the school choice opportunity is special for the community.

"Parents can tailor their student's education to fit what's best for their students needs," Robinson explained. "So if they're interested in robotics like the program we have here they can apply to Sabal Palm as one of the magnet school options."

Here's how the process works:

- Parents will be able to apply for up to three schools
- There will be an option to list them by order of importance
- Students an education focused on their needs and interests

"All of our schools have programs to meet the needs of all of our students," said Hanna. "At the end of the day, parents, and especially their students, can count on us at Leon County Schools to provide a quality education for their children."

For parents who do not have time to hop on the school website on day one, the district says there's no rush on applying. Applications will be accepted until March 1.

For anyone unsure of how to apply, the district has made it easy for a tutorial of sorts to walk you through. To access it, click here.
