LEON COUNTY, Fla. — Leon County Schools is picking up the cost of extra pre-K hours at some of its Title One schools.
Previously, the district provided three hours per day of pre-K instruction and parents could pay to keep their children in school for another three-hour block.
Now, the Leon County School District says it will foot the bill for those extra hours at those Title One schools, which are schools with a high amount of low-income students.
Leon County Schools Superintendent, Rocky Hanna, says this effort aims to get all children ready to start kindergarten, something many families previously could not afford.
"So we can encourage more children and families to get into those programs, so we can get them the academic resources they need during those fundamental years from zero to five when we know 95 percent of a child's brain is developed," said Hanna.
