LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a recent phone scam circulating the area where scammers are using the agency's main number to request money from victims to clear "outstanding fees."
The sheriff's office issued the alert on Friday after receiving several reports from citizens concerning a recent fraudulent telephone scam.
According to LCSO, the telephone calls appear to be originating from the agency’s main telephone number of (850) 606-3300.
The scam caller then requests money from the victim to clear past outstanding fees related to vehicle registrations and money to clear up outstanding warrants. LCSO says they will never contact anyone and request payment for a warrant or other fees over the telephone.
The sheriff's office also shared tips for avoiding any scams:
• Do not respond to texts, emails, or calls requesting money for personal information extortion or legal fees
• Do not take telephone calls from unknown numbers or robocalls. Scammers will use these calls to obtain more personal information
• Delete emails and do not respond to any requests for personal information from an unknown source
