TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WYXL) — The Leon County Sheriff's Office says a man has been arrested in connection to the fatal stabbing on New Year's Eve on Old St. Augustine Road.

Deputies with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting incident in the 9400 block of Old St. Augustine Road on December 31, 2020, around 8 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered 56-year-old Matthew Williams who sustained several stab wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene.

During the initial investigation, detectives with the LCSO Violent Crimes and Crime Scene units determined the victim’s residence had been burglarized and his vehicle was missing. Later that day, deputies located the victim’s vehicle being driven southbound on Wakulla Springs Highway.

After the vehicle sped away from a traffic stop, a short pursuit ensued. Eventually, the vehicle traveled off the road, into the woods, and stalled out.

The driver, 23-year-old Kaleb Sheffield, and a passenger were taken into custody.

According to the report, detectives learned Sheffield had an altercation with Williams at his residence. Sheffield took Williams’ truck and attempted to throw out a set of keys during the pursuit.

Sheffield was arrested and charged with Grand Theft Motor Vehicle and other accompanying offenses and transported to the Leon County Detention Facility.

Through investigative means, detectives were able to establish Sheffield as a suspect in the killing of Williams. Evidence gathered by LCSO Crime Scene Unit detectives further aided in detectives successfully obtaining an arrest warrant for Kaleb Sheffield for the murder of Matthew Williams.

Sheffield was served the arrest warrant while incarcerated in the LCDF.
