TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — A piece of land at the center of a parking garage debate In Tallahassee's Midtown could take on a much different purpose.

The city says, a spot along Thomasville Road is now being looked at for MedMen's newest cannabis dispensary. You might remember it's the same location city commissioners decided not to put a five-story parking garage last month.

Those who live in the Midtown area tell WTXL they'd rather see a small business popping up here rather than a huge parking garage.

The EMO Family Trust building is where the marijuana dispensary could open shop. The company has a license to operate up to 30 dispensaries in Florida.

Documents from Tallahassee's growth management department shows this project is in the early stages. City planners say this building can be used as a marijuana dispensary and still meet zoning code.

Documents state, "the City has chosen not to regulate medical marijuana facilities. Facilities are allowed in zoning categories where retail pharmacies (drug stores) are allowed and must meet all applicable state regulations."

WTXL spoke with some Midtown residents, who were not in favor of a five-story parking garage, but say they're fans of the dispensary.

"Many, many children. People who are really ill are asking for the right to use medical marijuana," said Kathy McQuire, a Lafayette Park resident. "So it's medicinal, it's for people who need it, it's licensed, it's authorized by the state. So it's a good business to have in town."

McQuire says part of Midtown's charm is that it's easy and enjoyable to walk. She says small, local businesses fit the neighborhood's vibe. A parking garage did not.

WTXL also reached out to Med Men corporate to confirm the lot on 5th Avenue and Thomasville Road will be the new Tallahassee location. The response we got back: "Nothing to comment on at the moment, but we will keep you in the loop as details come together."

Their website does confirm that a Tallahassee location is "coming soon," along with five others in South Florida.
