TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) — Spring break is here which would typically mean big gatherings across the country for college students. However, on Sunday, Governor Ron DeSantis said those gatherings have to stop.
The governor spoke to Miami and Fort Lauderdale officials on how they are imposing curfews and cutting off beach access to help curve the spread of Covid-19. Officials have indefinitely shut down public beaches.
Governor DeSantis said just because most college students are young and healthy does not mean that they cannot acquire the Coronavirus and transmit it to other people.
The governor also said Sunday, that mobile testing sites will be up and running soon. The biggest reason for the sites is not just about capacity but protecting the healthcare workforce.
"The biggest fear is that the healthcare workforce gets put on the sidelines because you have exposure to a Covid-19 patient and then you have to have 20 people in your hospital self-isolating," explained DeSantis. "So, that's one of the reasons why having this mobile testing site, so folks can go there instead of showing up at the hospital, that's why some of the other hospitals are working and they have plans to have some temporary facilities outside of their main facility to be able to accommodate that."
A specific date on when those sites will be up has yet to be determined.
