VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) — This weekend, seniors at Valdosta State University will be getting their degrees but some of them say they strongly oppose who will be speaking at the commencement ceremony.
Georgia Govenor Brian Kemp will be the keynote speaker at Saturday’s ceremony but that’s not sitting well with some students.
They say Governor Kemp does not represent VSU standards or upholds their views. Meanwhile, other students say they are just happy to get their diplomas.
"I personally have no problem about it. I've been going to school for four years and I am excited about getting that degree and celebrating with my family," said Philomina Ampofo, a graduating senior. "So what he has to say will not affect me and my future so congratulations to him and congratulations to the graduating seniors."
VSU released a statement to WTXL regarding Kemp headlining this weekend's commencement:
“As we approach the university’s 227th commencement ceremony, Valdosta State University is honored to welcome Governor Brian Kemp as the Spring 2019 commencement speaker. This is a unique opportunity for our students, their families, and the campus community to hear from our state’s highest leader. “Valdosta State University is committed to fostering a learning environment where open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are welcomed and to graduating a quality, diverse student population prepared for roles as leaders in a global society.”
Governor Kemp is expected to give the commencement speech during Saturday’s ceremony at 7 p.m. In Valdosta.
