GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a recent check by mail scam that's impacting people in our area.

Deputies say scammers are sending a check in the mail from an unknown source asking you to deposit the check and send some of the money via MoneyGram or western union to an account.

The paperwork looks legitimate but may have multiple fake companies and names listed.

The Check often comes from a real bank listed, however deputies say the check is also counterfeit.

When the victim deposits the check the money goes through and is sent to the accounts and some is kept by the victim.

Days later the check bounces or is dishonored as it is fake. The victim then is responsible for paying back the full check amount.

Authorities say if you receive this type of mail or believe you have been a victim of fraud call and report to your local law enforcement agency.
