Franklin Co. sheriff says 'system is broken' after burglary suspect gets out on $2 bond

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — The Franklin County Sheriff's office is decrying the criminal justice system after a man who was arrested for the armed robbery of an elderly couple in broad daylight got out of jail on a $2 bond.

FCSO says John Dean was arrested in early June for an armed robbery at a elderly couple's home on North Bayshore Drive in Eastpoint. He, along with Briar Shiver, were arrested for the crime and charged with armed burglary on dwelling and petit theft under $300.

Dean was given a $1 bond for each of the charges by Judge Martin Fitzpatrick and released Thursday for time served.

Sheriff A.J. Smith says that this is a serious crime but was treated as such a minor incident by the judge.

“The system is broken” said Sheriff Smith. “How can I protect and keep our community safe, when these are the repercussions of crime? This was a crime in daylight on our senior citizens.”

According to FCSO, Dean has also been arrested for meth in the past and was most recently arrested for meth after attending rehab.
