MIDWAY, Fla. — A former chief of police for the city of Midway is in surgery after being shot in Georgia.

The City of Midway says former Police Chief Jerome Turner Jr. was shot in the line of duty on Monday and is in surgery.

According to WGXA, Turner was called to the scene of a reported fight.

WGXA reports that Turner informed authorities that he was chasing the suspect, 19-year-old Veltavious T. Griggs, when Griggs pulled out a gun and contact between Turner and dispatch was lost.

According to WGXA, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said additional police officers arrived and found Turner and Griggs had been shot.

Griggs was pronounced dead on scene and found with a gun.
