Leon County deputies warn residents about paying at the pumps after Florida Bluetooth skimmer goes viral

LEON COUNTY, Fla. — Police in Florida say they've discovered a new type of gas pump skimmer targeting credit cards.

Criminals are using a new technology to get inside your bank account.

Investigators in Clearwater describe it as a Bluetooth-equipped skimmer that allows suspects to sit nearby and collect your credit card information without ever having to return to the pump.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office recommends using a credit card instead of a debit card if you choose to pay at the pump.

"These types of things can happen at any gas pump. The keys that they have will fit most gas pumps," said LCSO Deputy Dave Teems. "They're so at depth at doing it and so because they've done so many they're quicker than sometimes the people that work on the pumps at getting in and out of them."

If you believe your information was stolen, call your bank. Then call the Leon County Sheriff's Office at (850) 606-3300.
