TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Football players from Florida High are getting a new set of safety gear to help keep them safe on the field.
The gear was given by the Taylor Haugen Foundation. The foundation's safety program was created back in 2011 in hopes of better protecting school-age athletes from internal injuries.
On Monday, one-of-a-kind protective rib shirts were given to players on both the JV and varsity teams.
"I just feel that every single player we are fitting is one less player that can get hurt. 90 percent of our job is bringing awareness to this type of high speed, high tech equipment that could make a major difference in helping better to protect our kids from abdominal injuries," said Brian Haugen, with the Talyor Haugen Foundation.
Since 2011, nearly 5,000 players, on at least 80 teams from 13 different states, have received the protective gear.
