SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — The raging 5 Mile Swamp Fire continues to burn in Santa Rosa County.

It began Monday morning near I-10.

Agricultural Commissioner Nikki Fried says it was an escaped prescribed burn and now resources from the entire state are working to contain it.

The fire has already burned 17 homes and buildings.

"We cannot let down our guard, the threat is far from over, there is no rain forecasted and the conditions will continue to be increased," said Fried. "Residents should be ready for a wildfire to impact their neighborhood."

The commissioner reminding Floridians it is the peak of wildfire season with a number of active fires throughout the state.

Fried also encourages people living near the area to keep a bag packed with important documents just in case there's a need to evacuate.
