HAVANA, Fla. (WTXL) — The Florida Department of Environmental Protection reported that a lift station pump controller in Havana failed on Sunday, leading to an 18,000-gallon sewage spill.

The failure caused pumps not to run or send an alarm subsequently causing the sewage spill.

Officials said an estimated 18,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled at the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy lift station, located at 75 College Drive, after the failure.

Florida DEP says the site has power and a backup generator on-site, so the failure was not due to a power outage.

The spill was stopped on Monday morning.

Pump trucks have currently removed approximately 10,000 gallons of the spill and have treated the area with hydrated lime.
