FBI warns about new e-skimming

LEON COUNTY, Fla. — Be careful the next time you shop online.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning the public about e-skimming.

The agency says hackers are putting codes on certain websites, and once that code is loaded, hackers can capture your credit card data as you enter it on the website.

That data can be sold on the dark web for other people to use without your permission.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office says you can never be too careful when using your credit card.

"You want to make sure that you are using all the safety precautions, whether you are shopping online, shopping in person," said LCSO deputy Dave Teems. "Those safety precautions are in place for a reason. Use as many as you can to help keep yourself from getting your card skimmed."

The FBI says you could also install anti-virus software into your browser that may detect a hacker's code. But as software and code evolves, it could go undetected.
