MAYO, Fla. (WTXL) — Two students are facing criminal charges after deputies say they brought a gun and a loaded magazine to Lafayette High School.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's office reported that on Monday, Lafayette High School staff received a tip that a student had a weapon on school campus.

Following policy, school personnel and the Sheriff’s Office Resource Deputy locked down campus and immediately isolated the student in question.

Deputies say they managed to recover a magazine loaded with ammunition from that student before being alerted that another student was in possession of the gun.

That student was also isolated and the gun was recovered, the entire incident lasting approximately 20 minutes.

Both students were arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Jail where they area facing charges of possession of a firearm on a school property.

"We commend the school staff and the Resource Deputy for their swift action," the sheriff's office wrote in a social media post. "We are thankful for the tip and we continue to encourage everyone if you 'See something Say something.'"
