LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a correctional officer was assaulted by inmates and another inmate was found dead in a suspected homicide on the same day.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, two inmates assaulted a correctional officer at Mayo Correctional Institution Annex on Wednesday.

Using "improvised weapons," officials say the inmates inflicted serious injuries to the officer. Additional security staff immediately responded and the inmates were subdued.

The officer was examined and treated by medical staff and transported to an area hospital for additional treatment of his injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

Secretary Mark Inch said, “We are grateful our officer is expected to make a full recovery. He showed extraordinary courage and his teammates are to be commended for their quick response. We appreciate our correctional officers who serve in this often-overlooked profession dedicated to public safety.”

However, during the response to the assault of the officer, officers received information that a suspected inmate on inmate homicide had occurred somewhere else in the facility. Officers then located a deceased inmate.

The FDLE is investigating these incidents.

As part of the active investigation, officials are unable to provide further information about the identity of the officer, the inmates involved in the attack, nor the inmate who was found dead.
