Community leaders urge residents to prepare now for storms

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Hurricane season starts Saturday.

Friday morning, leaders from both Leon County and the City of Tallahassee got a jump on the season ahead.

Leaders all urged residents to get prepared now. If you wait until a hurricane has formed, you've waited too long.

At Friday morning's press conference, community leaders each placed an important item in a hurricane bucket, which ranged from important documents, to batteries, and even the county's 2019 Disaster Survival Guide.

Local leaders are asking locals to build a similar bucket to be ready for this hurricane season.

FEMA reminds us that the first 72 hours during a disaster, those are "on you". You need to be prepared to handle that 72 hours without help.

For residents who don't know where to start, or aren't sure where to begin, there will be a Build Your Bucket Expo happening Saturday morning.

"Be ready on a personal level, on a family level, and on a neighborhood level. Come out to the event tomorrow, the Build your Bucket event. Let's get together," said Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey. "Let's make sure we're prepared so that as we go into hurricane season, Tallahassee is also going to be hurricane strong with Leon County."

Those who make it out to Saturday's event will get to see interactive exhibits, and talk with experts on how to prepare themselves and their homes, and how to recover after a disaster.

The Leon County and City of Tallahassee's Build your Bucket expo runs from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Saturday morning at the Al Lawson Center at Florida A&M University.
