Cairo man arrested for fatal stabbing on New Year's Day

CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) — A 67-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a fatal stabbing on New Year's Day.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation along with the Cairo Police Department has arrested Alex Smith III, 67, in connection to the murder of 62-year-old Donald Vandergriff.

The GBI says they were called to investigate a homicide in the 400 block of 6th Street Southwest on Jan. 1.

When Cairo officers arrived on scene, Vandergriff was found dead inside the home from apparent stab wounds.

During the course of the investigation, evidence was obtained that pointed to Smith as the suspect in Vandergriff's murder.

Smith was arrested and booked without incident into the Grady County Jail. He has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

The investigation is still active and ongoing at this time.
