CAIRO, GA.(WTXL) — Booker Gainor will no longer serve as the mayor of Cairo after qualifying as a Democratic candidate for the District 173 House of Representatives.

According to Georgia law, this position disqualifies him from serving as Mayor.

In 2017, ABC 27 told you Gainor was elected as Cairo's first black Mayor.

Gainor does not plan to contest what happened.

On Tuesday, Gainor made a statement to ABC 27 saying "I just would like for my journey as a young official to be a pillar of hope to inspire and empower others to never give up and continue to live above status quo."

A special election will likely be held to replace him on May 19.
