TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The 3rd annual Blue Jeans and Blazers fundraiser just was held on Thursday night.
The event benefits Second Harvest of the Big Bend, and WTXL is a proud sponsor.
"Even on a day to day basis, they don't have the means to get food. So it's really personal to a lot of people in my church, especially the elders. So it hits home with me," said Alfreda James.
Alfreda James says seeing how hunger affects so many people in her community is devastating that's why supporting Blue Jeans and Blazers is so important to her.
"It just involves the community as a whole, feeding people that don't have the means to eat. That's from children to adults to seniors," said James.
James and many others told WTXL they came out to support Second Harvest's mission to fill every hungry stomach and are happy knowing they're helping stock these empty shelves by getting food to those who need it.
Rick Minor, Second Harvest of the Big Bend CEO says, every dollar equals four meals.
"We provide food to about 55,000 people a month in the Big Bend area, but the number of people who are hungry in this area is about twice that amount. The need out there is very, very severe," said Minor.
Last year's Blue Jeans and Blazers fundraiser raised more than 30,000 dollars for the food bank.
"Making sure that we fight hunger, making sure people who need to be fed. Everyone's coming together to make sure we're doing the best we can to give the community what they need," said Patrick Pratt.
