Local media react to Maryland newspaper shooting

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Even though The Capital Gazette shooting took place in Maryland, reaction was felt all over the country, even here in Tallahassee, specifically in the media.

The moment Jarrod Ramos began shooting at the offices of The Capital Gazette newspaper, and the numbers of those who lost their lives were released, newsrooms in the Capital City held their breath, as we know this could have happened anywhere.

"It's going to be hard there for a really long time and I don't know how you ever get over that," said Jennifer Portman, News Director of Tallahassee Democrat. "But I think that in every, certainly newspapers, small newspapers, commuter newspapers, certainly all reporters, journalists, we're just regular people with friends, family, kids and all that and of course we have solidarity with them just as we do with the victims of Pulse, with the victims of Parkland, and you know crimes everyday that plague our communities, we wish that things would just get better."

Portman says the Democrat will publish a tribute to the victims in their editorial.
